The following is an update on our fund raising efforts to date and the announcement of the final (and biggest) fund raising event of the season - a New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills trip to New York for four people. I’ll put the details in another post, but here is the text of the letter going out to all members and the reasons behind the need to raise more funds.
A Fund Raising Update From The Scarborough Football Club
Dear Parents, Players, and fellow SFC Members,
In our 12th year of operation, the Scarborough Football Club has undergone some drastic change in our fund raising efforts. In the past, the majority of funds needed to run the programs at all levels were generated through player registrations, corporate sponsorship and the annual Calendar sales.
With the move to a Booster group at the High School level the Calendar sales were no longer a good fit as we could not ask parents to pay upfront and had difficulty collecting the funds.
In July of this year, the newly elected SFC Board of Directors voted to stop the Calendar sales as a primary fundraiser, and to come up with some new ideas. We wanted to get out and visibly fund raise through more traditional methods. The Scarborough Football Club felt that it was important for the community to see the Club actively working for the funds required to provide a quality experience for our players and to build community awareness and support for Scarborough Football!
Player registrations still play a large part at the Youth and Middle School levels, but are not a part of the High School Boosters due to the school funding the football program at that level. Corporate sponsorship accounts for 10-15% of the Youth & Middle School Budgets and 25% of the High School Booster program. In total, an additional $9,000 in new Fund Raising ideas was needed to cover operating expenses and budgets for 2008. Budgeted funds are used for normal operating expenses such as field paint, referees, and insurance at the Youth & Middle School levels. At the High School, we provide team dinners, pay for the end of year team banquet, and provide team t-shirts. In addition to that, there are many other operating costs for all 3 levels too numerous to list here.
Besides the regular, planned expenses, there are always requests for other purchases such as badly needed new equipment or other items necessary to improve the programs. So this year, the SFC voted to purchase a new 5 man blocking sled for the youth program, $2,000 in new practice equipment for the middle school, and a new 5 man blocking sled for the high school program. So how did the SFC manage to achieve our fundraising goals? As you may know, this past June, the SFC held it’s 1st Annual Golf Tournament Fund Raiser at Nonesuch Golf Club. This event drew 83 golfers and many corporate hole sponsors. The event helped to raise $7,300 in funds towards our target.
Our next Fund Raiser was at Scarborough’s 350th Celebration. The Club had two booths, one selling food and water, and the other selling water, t-shirts, and a very successful Football Toss Game. This raised an additional $800 towards our goal. That left about $700 that we needed to raise to cover the costs associated with the 2008 budget.
Now remember how earlier I mentioned that the Club is often asked to cover unplanned expenses? Well over the last month, the SFC has stepped up and covered two unplanned items that were not included in the original High School budgets. First, the SFC covered a $3,330 expense to pay for the required reconditioning of all the SHS football equipment, which is mandated by the school insurance carrier and the SMAA league. This item was eliminated from the 2008 School Budget, but it needed to get paid as the work had already been done. Second, at the request of the High School coaching staff, we purchased a new DVD camcorder for to film games and practices at a cost of $350.
That took our $700 shortfall and increased it to a deficit of $4,380.
Now that sounds like a big number – and it is. But Scarborough Football Club has come up with an amazing Fundraising Event to cover this deficit – and possibly fund a few additional items for the High School that all players will benefit from for years to come.
The SFC is conducting a Patriots vs. Buffalo Raffle to raise the remaining needed funds. We are giving away a fantastic four day trip for four people, with lodging, round trip motor coach from V.I.P. Tours, breakfast, a tailgate party and tickets to see the New England Patriots play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, December 28th. Raffle tickets are only $20 each for your chance to win 4 tickets to see the Pats play the Buffalo Bills during the Christmas break. Please see the attached flyer for complete details.
There are only 400 raffle tickets for sale – and we need your help in selling them! We are looking for volunteers to help sell the raffle tickets at all Home games for the High School Varsity, Middle School Varsity & JV, and Youth games. We need your help!
